They were established with the goal of fostering leadership and managerial skills, the IIMs have played a pivotal role in shaping the outlook of business education in India. Like my earlier articles on IITs, IIITs, and NITs, I’ll try to mention in this article some key aspects about IIMs as well.

1. Foundation and History

The first IIM, IIM Calcutta, was established in 1961, followed by IIM Ahmedabad in the same year. IIMs were set up with the assistance of leading international business schools and organizations.

Admission to the PGP programs is highly competitive and is primarily based on the Common Admission Test (CAT). CAT is a nationwide entrance exam that assesses candidates’ quantitative, verbal, and logical reasoning skills.

5. Faculty and Research

IIMs have distinguished faculty members who are experts in various management disciplines. Faculty members actively engage in research, publishing in reputed journals and contributing to the development of management theories.

IIMs often establish centers of excellence focusing on specialized areas such as entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, and sustainability. These centers serve as hubs for cutting-edge research and industry collaboration.

7. Global Collaborations

Many IIMs have collaborations with renowned international business schools, facilitating student and faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and global exposure.
